Glovemate, the most effective and successful product ever designed to stop the sting and pains from catching baseballs and softballs, was invented and patented by Tampa, Florida native Jeff Greenhalgh. Jeff Greenhalgh played professional baseball in the Pittsburgh Pirates organization. Drafted by the Pirates in the 15th round in 1976, Greenhalgh's professional baseball career was cut short by an injury related to baseball.
Greenhalgh was awarded All-State honors in high school for his .454 batting average, slugging percentage and prolific home run production. Greenhalgh then had a much heralded college career at Valdosta State University (Georgia). At 6'3" and 215 pounds, Jeff was known around campus and the South Atlantic Conference as "The Moose."
Greenhalgh quickly developed a reputation for his consistent hitting and "tape measure" home runs. In the process Greenhalgh set school and conference home run records. Greenhalgh received national honors by being named first team NCAA Div-II Southeast Region and played in the NCAA Div-II College World Series. For his stellar play in the field, Jeff was also awarded multiple gold glove awards.
"Besides playing and being a lifelong baseball fan, I always wanted to do something that would have a lasting impact for players of the game." Said Jeff, "I always remembered, at every level of ball, the stinging pain of catching hard hit and thrown balls." "Even at the pro level I was not surprised to see players putting various items inside their glove to lessen the "sting."
One evening in 1994, Greenhalgh picked up his baseball glove and began to toss a ball into the glove. Immediate recall of the pain, stinging and soreness from catching balls immediately came to mind. After several design modifications, Greenhalgh submitted his finished work to gain a patent. He was awarded a full patent in 1998 by the U.S. Patent Office for his innovative design and practical application to "Stop the Sting".
Greenhalgh, President of Glovemate Sports, Inc., launched the new product, Glovemate, at the Sporting Goods Manufacturers Super Show in February 2000. Glovemate is now actively sold year-round in over 3,000 sporting good stores as well as in catalogs and online.
New innovative baseball-softball products are currently being designed by Greenhalgh to be available soon. "It is my strong desire to design and provide the most unique and effective on-the-field and training products for baseball and softball players of all ages and levels, said Greenhalgh."
